The SAP and public education:

The Commonwealth’s Student Assistance Program, which is administered by the Department of Education in collaboration with the Departments of Health and Public Welfare, is designed to assist school personnel in identifying issues, including alcohol, drugs and others, which pose a barrier to a student’s learning and school success.

About the Program:

Student assistance is a systematic process designed to mobilize school resources to work with parents in helping remove the barriers to a student’s learning and school success.

The team works with the parents and students to examine options, provide information on community resources and set up linkages to these resources when necessary.

When Intervention services are recommended, students work with SAP team members and/or outside service providers (with parent permission) for a set period of time. Following these intervention services, students are re-assessed for a long term recommendation with parental approval.

The team does not provide diagnosis or treatment services nor does it replace the parents’ decision-making responsibility relative to the resolution of their children’s problems.
