Future Ready Index

What is the Future Ready Index?

The Future Ready Index is Pennsylvania’s public school accountability tool. Instead of relying only on standardized test scores, it uses a dashboard-style report that includes a wide range of measures showing how well schools are preparing students for success after high school.

It was launched by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) to give families, educators, and communities a clearer picture of school performance.

Some of the key features include:

  • Academic Performance

    • State assessment results (PSSA, Keystone Exams)

    • Student growth (PVAAS)

    • English learner progress

  • Student Success & School Quality

    • On-track measures in early grades (reading and math)

    • Attendance rates

    • College and career readiness (industry credentials, AP/IB exams, dual enrollment, career education assessments)

  • Graduation and Postsecondary Readiness

    • Four- and five-year graduation rates

    • Postsecondary transition data

The idea is to move beyond a single test score and provide a holistic view of school performance, while also promoting equity by highlighting performance for different student groups (such as by race/ethnicity, economic disadvantage, students with disabilities, English learners).

In short: the Future Ready Index shows how well PA schools are preparing students for college, career, and life after graduation.
