Local Scholarships will be posted here for student access and will also be posted in the guidance office.

Most are scholarships that you will hear announced at graduation. The guidance office will post applications as they become available from the sponsors. Stop by the guidance office if you have any questions.

Through a generous endowment created by Alton Taylor, Sullivan County High School graduates are afforded the opportunity to apply for the ‘Alton Taylor’ scholarship each year.

Detailed instructions are included in the application. Please be sure to read the   application in its entirety and follow the directions to ensure that you submit all of the parts necessary to be considered for the award.

Included in the required attachments will be a copy of your acceptance letter, your SAI as found in your FAFSA account, a copy of the financial aid package from your college/university, and a printout of the tuition costs for your college/university.

You will also need two recommendations, one from a teacher on the specific form on the website application, and one from a community member not related to you.

Sister Theresa Fitzgerald Memorial Scholarship

Sister Theresa Fitzgerald (IHM) served others for over 60 years as a teacher, librarian, and administrator at all levels of education from elementary to college. This award shall be known as the “Sister Theresa Fitzgerald Memorial Scholarship” and will honor an intelligent, compassionate life spent serving others. This award is open to one member of the graduating class of Sullivan County High School each year and is renewable for up to 3 years upon meeting certain requirements (including maintaining minimum GPA of 2.5 and continuing education for a degree or certification) and at the sole discretion of The Fitzgerald Family Foundation.

Knights of Columbus Scholarship

The Knights of Columbus Council 12406 proposes to make an annual award to one member of the graduating class of Sullivan County High School.  The award shall be known as the “Knights of Columbus Scholarship”. 

Basic Qualifications and Information:

  1. Student must be a graduating senior of Sullivan County High School.

  2. Student should have completed two years of vocational training at the Northern Tier Career Center or equivalent program.  In the event that no applicants meet this criterion and fulfill the scholarship requirements, preference will be given to a student who attended at least one year of vocational training, followed by a student who excelled in a specialty area at the high school.   

  3. While in high school, applicant shall have a demonstrated commitment to the local community through community and/or family activities, regardless of church affiliation.

  4. The student must be planning to attend an accredited educational institution. 

Knights of Columbus Application

NTSWA David T. Terrill Scholarship

NTSWA awards three scholarships annually, one each in Bradford, Sullivan, and Tioga Counties, Pennsylvania. Each award can be any amount up to or exceeding one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) if deemed appropriate by the Authority’s Board of Directors. The award will be made payable directly to the award recipient’s institution of higher education in the second semester of study. NTSWA reserves the right to withhold an award due to the lack of eligible participants for one or all of the three counties affected. NTSWA reserves the right to make additional awards during the approval process. NTSWA also reserves the right to withhold an award in the event that the recipient does not successfully complete the first semester of higher education.

Eligibility:

The applicant must meet the following criteria to be considered eligible for the NTSWA Scholarship: 1. The applicant must be a high school senior that is a resident of Bradford, Sullivan, or Tioga County, Pennsylvania or a high school senior that does not live within those limits but attends a school within those limits. 2. The applicant must provide documentation of acceptance at an institution of higher education (junior college, four year college or a university) in a field related to the environment (i.e. biology, chemistry, environmental science, meteorology, etc.) or waste management. If awarded the scholarship, the recipient must provide documentation of completion of their first semester and registration of a second semester. The award cannot be distributed until such information is provided. ***NTSWA does not discriminate of the basis of age, sex, race or ethnic background.

Sullivan County Rural Electric Cooperative (SCREC) is issuing scholarships for graduating high school seniors. To be considered, students must meet the following criteria and submit an application:

• Student’s guardian must be an SCREC member;

• Student must be a graduating high school senior;

• Student must attend either a public or private school while living in our service territory, or be homeschooled/cyber schooled in our service territory;

• Student must be obtaining a postsecondary education (e.g., university/college, trade school, electric lineworker school, etc.) OR opening a small business; and

• Student cannot be an immediate relation to any employee or director of SCREC

The PALCO Members Helping Members Scholarship was named in honor of the credit union philosophy of "people helping people". PALCO's Scholarship Committee will award scholarships of $1000 each to two applicants that exemplify the credit union philosophy; through volunteerism, community service, leadership, and academic achievements.

Requirements:

  1. Follow completed application

  2. Write an essay, complete with at least 250 words but no more than 750 words on the following: What distinguishes PALCO from other financial institutions?, What are your career goals and how do you plan to achieve them?, What has influenced your career decisions?

Tom Hardisky Memorial Scholarships provide financial assistance to high school seniors who exhibit excellence in a well rounded educational and extracurricular program. The scholarships are made possible by the annual gun raffle, and are administered by the PA Trappers District 7 Scholarship Committee.

Eligibility:

Any current high school senior who is enrolled in a public or accredited private school in the district 7 trappers jurisdiction area, or a relative of a member of the District 7 Trappers Association. Has attained a 2.0 cumulative GPA, non weighted, based on a 4.0 scale for the three previous academic years (Grades 9, 10, and 11). And are planning to continue their education beyond high school in an accredited institution of higher education or technical school.

The Sullivan County High School Athletic Booster Club Scholarship is a one time $250 scholarship, awarded each year to two Sullivan County High School senior athletes. The David A. DeWire Scholarship Fund was established by Emily DeWire, David's window, in his memory.

Criteria of Eligibility:

• Graduating senior from Sullivan County High School.

• Accepted into an accredited university or college.

• A recommendation from the Science Department must be made for the student (written or verbally) to qualify. If available, someone from the Science Department should also be included on the selection committee.

• Has excelled in the general science curriculum.

• Must be committed to a post-secondary education at a two or four year school.

Mike Getz Scholarship

Mike Getz was a 1971 graduate of Sullivan County High School. He was an accomplished high school and college athlete - playing golf, soccer, basketball, and track. Besides sports, Mike was active in theater, various clubs and was a social butterfly known for being the life of the party. Mike went to Penn State University and had a successful career in real estate before passing away in 2022. Known for talking about “Griffin Fever”, Mike was passionate about Sullivan County High School and its sports programs – as a player, fan, and coach. Mike’s friends and family have established this scholarship to assist a male and female student athlete from Sullivan County High School attend an accredited two- or four-year college.

Criteria of Eligibility:

• Graduating senior from Sullivan County High School.

• Accepted into an accredited two- or four-year technical school, college, or university.

• This scholarship prefers students that have received at least two varsity letters

• Have a GPA of 80% or higher.

• Please provide a list of school-based activities (including leadership positions, clubs and athletics) as well as community volunteer activities and the number of months or years.

• During his basketball coaching career, Mike told his teams to do three things each day – “Have fun, play hard and be friends”. Please provide a 200-to-250-word essay that describes how your Sullivan County academic, extracurricular and athletic career embodied these three things.

This scholarship was established through the estate of Betty Bahr a long time resident of Dushore, Pennsylvania.

Criteria of Eligibility: 

*Graduating senior from Sullivan County High School. 

*Essay (200 – 250 words double spaced) that describes areas in your life where you have demonstrated leadership and overcame obstacles either through your school, social or family life. 

*Students will have a GPA of 3.5 or higher. 

This fund was established by the Shoemaker family. Stevie was a Sullivan County High School librarian and Doc was a veterinarian. They were owners of the weekly newspaper The Sullivan Review. They valued the importance of an education. The fund will give an annual scholarship each year to a graduating senior residing in Sullivan County, who is pursuing a degree in Library Science, Journalism, Biology, Chemistry, Zoology, English, Math, Technology and Computer Science. Eligibility Criteria: 

The Van Vlack Scholarship Trust Fund was established to award students who express an interest in pursuing a career in the field of medicine, education, public service (law enforcement and social work), or trade professions such as HVAC, electrical, and plumbing.

To be eligible for the Peter C. Van Vlack Scholarship you must:

  • Be accepted to an accredited college, university, or professional school in a program leading to a degree in medicine, education, public service, or trade

  • have a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.0, or 76.45 in our system

The Sonestown Legion proposes to make a $1000.00 award to two members of the graduating class of Sullivan County High School.  The award shall be known as the “Sonestown Legion Scholarship Award”.

The Kiwanis Club of Sullivan County proposes to make an annual award of $1000.00 to one graduating senior residing in Sullivan County, including Sullivan County High School, Home School or Cyber-Charter Schools. Funds will be made available to the educational institute on the contingency that the student is entering their first semester of their second year post secondary education program.

The White Ash Land Association proposes to make an annual award to one member of the graduating class of Sullivan County High School. The award shall be known as the “White Ash Environmental Stewardship Award”.

● Student must be a graduating senior of Sullivan County High School.

● Student must have shown a sincere interest in environmental stewardship.

● The student must be planning to continue learning after graduation through on the job training, certificate, associates or bachelor’s programs, military training or apprenticeship.

EMPO is a private, non-profit, organization whose purpose includes educating, recreating, and preserving the customs and conditions of traditional weapons, crafts, and artisans of early America.

Eligibility:

  • Students must be pursuing a degree or certificate at an accredited institution of higher education (i.e. Junior College, Community College, Technical College, University, or trade school)

  • Students must be involved in school and/or community activities (i.e. FFA, 4-H, Ecology Club, Scouting, Science Club, Student Council, Leo Club, Leadership Council, etc.)

  • Students must submit a 700-1000 word essay responding to one of the three prompts listed on page two. Your essay should be in Times New Roman, 12pt font, and be double spaced. Your essay must include verifiable citations. The citations may be in your preferred format.

  • A letter of recommendation must be attached to the application from a teacher, mentor, or other community leader.

The recipients of the competitive awards presented by the Sullivan County Scholarship Association are selected by a panel of retired educators based on the following criteria: grades, academic achievements, extracurricular activities, athletic participation and achievements, community service, work experience, and two essay questions. The association will award scholarships to students in all curricular areas.

The Doc Shoemaker scholarship is established by the Dushore Lions club in memory of Dr. Thomas Shoemaker, a longtime member of the club. He was a local veterinarian and owner of The Sullivan Review. He valued the importance of an education. The Club will give a $500 scholarship each year to a graduate of Sullivan County high School who is pursuing a degree in a Science related field, Journalism, or a Business related field. Only applicants in these areas will be considered.

Sullivan County High School graduating seniors are eligible for this award given by the Dushore Lions Club in memory of Robert “Bob” Lambert. Bob was one of the original chartered members of the Dushore Lions Club. The Dushore Lions Club will base its awards on a student’s record of academic achievement, proven leadership skills, extracurricular activities, community involvement, and character. Applicants should understand that the submission of this application authorizes the use of their official high school transcript for review by the selection committee or panel from the Dushore Lions Club.

Redeemer Church Scholarships are presented each year to Sullivan County High School seniors who are active members of their church. Each recipient must complete a short essay concerning their involvement in church and community, as well as their plans after graduation. The Bob Raff Memorial Award, presented by the Eagles Mere Laporte Lions Club, is presented annually to a graduating senior who has displayed good character, citizenship, and academic achievement. Mr. Raff was a long time member of the Lions Club and very active in the local community, including serving on the Sullivan County School Board. The name of the Eagles Mere Laporte Lions club Award, which Bob chaired for many years, has been updated to honor his legacy.

DABA Young Entrepreneur Award

The Dushore Area Business Association presents the DABA Young Entrepreneur Award annually. The purpose of the award is to acknowledge and support an individual who has, or intends to, engage in business activity in Sullivan County upon completion of their high school studies.

This award is not a scholarship in the traditional sense. While an applicant may intend on immediately continuing their education at the college level, applicants will also be considered if:

1. Applicant has already demonstrated entrepreneurial talent by starting a local business,

2. Intends to embark on a locally-focused career in a trade - including Career and Technical Education (CTE) or vocational training as well as non-degree training in business related fields (including, but not limited to, Accounting/Bookkeeping, Business Administration, Communications, Entrepreneurship, Financial Planning, Health and Human Services, Human Resources, etc). public service or starting a new business

The Gerald Silverstrim Jr. Scholarship is presented by his Family in honor of Gerald Silverstrim Jr., a former SCHS graduate who through his 30-year career in Proctor and Gamble and his work in the community was known for his desire to help and teach others and possessed an uncanny ability to develop creative solutions to solve any problem. As the Family reviews applications, it selects a recipient that embodies these same qualities and hopes that these students go out into the world to share the knowledge they have, embrace change, and make a positive impact on the world.

The Carl ‘Wayandaga’ Pierce Scholarship

For over two decades the Carl “Wayandaga” Pierce Scholarship has been awarded annually in memory of Chief Wayandaga and to make students more aware of the impact of Native Americans on society and history both past and present. Scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors of Sullivan County, Towanda, and Wyalusing High Schools, and members of the EDN, Inc. and their family members. Recipients must be planning to move on to higher education or vocational training. First prize winners receive awards of three hundred ($300.00) dollars.

The family of Philip Snyder of Laporte proposes to make an award to one member of the graduating class of Sullivan County High School. The award shall be known as the “Philip Snyder Memorial Award”.

Basic Qualifications and Information:

1. Student must be a graduating senior of Sullivan County High School.

2. Student must have shown a sincere interest in the industrial arts / technology education program while attending Sullivan County. Preference is given to a student who completed the highest level of manufacturing and construction and/or power lab courses, or attended the Northern Tier Career Center.

3. The student must be planning to attend a two or four year course of study after high school. Preference is given to a student majoring in a technical field.

Big Horn Nature Conservancy

The Big Horn Nature Conservancy Charitable Trust proposes to make an annual award to one member of the graduating class of Sullivan County High School. The award shall be known as the “Big Horn Nature Conservancy Environmental Stewardship Award”.

Basic Qualifications and Information:

1. Student must have be a graduating senior of Sullivan County High School.

2. Student must have shown a sincere interest in environmental stewardship.

3. Preference will be given to students pursuing a degree in biology or environmental studies, however students who have a demonstrated history of environmental stewardship will also be considered regardless of post-secondary plans.

4. All applicants must complete the questions on page two to be considered for the award.

The David Metzger, Sr. Scholarship is given in memory of David Metzger Sr. by Nelson Armes Post 601, Sons of the American Legion. The Tomcho-Houck Award is given in Memory of Tim Tomcho and Doug Houck by Nelson Armes Post 601, Sons of the American Legion. The recipients must be entering their first year of higher education and submit an essay as to why they wish to further their education. Grades, activities, financial need, and the essays are considered when choosing the recipients. Applicant must be pursuing a career in the building industry field.
