Earlier this school year the 6th graders at SCES studied heat energy in science class. Their unit of study was based on real-life phenomena. At the beginning of the unit the kids were presented with a fictional school that needed to upgrade their heating system. The kids were tasked with being able to present a scientific argument/proposal for a new system by the end of the unit. During the unit the kids learned about heat energy, energy transfer, and explored different types of heating systems through reading, exploration, and using the simulation software included in their science curriculum. As a culmination and review of their learning Superintendent, Doug Lindner, and Maintenance Director, Chris McMahon, treated the 6th graders to a tour of Sullivan County School District’s heating systems. Mr. Lindner and Mr. McMahon guided the students on a tour of the biomass system and highlighted its function and benefits for the students. Mr. Lindner explained how the system is cost efficient compared to an oil fueled system, that it is environmentally friendly due to its high burning efficiency and small carbon footprint, and how the system supports the local economy as the system is manufactured in Pennsylvania and the fuel chips are supplied by Lewis Lumber in Hillsgrove, PA. Mr. McMahon led the students through the oil furnace boiler system explaining how this system operates and the amount of fuel it uses daily. He also explained how the biomass and oil furnace systems can work together during the coldest months of the year if needed. During the tour and in the classroom, careers in HVAC were also highlighted for the students. This activity was a great way to tie classroom learning to real-world applications and both Mrs. Wettlaufer and her science students greatly enjoyed it.

Sullivan County Elementary School had two teams compete in the 2025 Battle of the Books Interscholastic Reading Competition on Saturday, April 5 at the Northern Tioga School District. This is a fun, academic competition for schools in our region with divisions for elementary, middle, and high school teams. Students read from a list of books for several months and then compete as a team in a quiz-style tournament. The "Red Riders" won 2 of their 3 speed rounds while the "Lady Griffins" won all 3 of their speed rounds. Most importantly the teams were very supportive of each other, displayed good teamwork, and read a lot of books! Congratulations! The Red Riders were: Bryant Manuel, Logan Edkin, Jackson Holcombe, Rayden Hoover-Brown, Roman Lazzari, Samson Pennella, Brody Rohe, Samuel Abernethy, and Blake Saiers. The Lady Griffins: Reagan McCarty, Maddix Busch, Hazel Harney, Brielle Wade, Harper Lambert, Bailey Nace, Hailey Ritinski, Clara Saba-Rionick, and Rayne Wilson.

Our K-12 students had an unforgettable experience at the Sweethearts & Heroes assembly last week! This powerful program brought messages of hope, empathy, and action—teaching students how to be everyday heroes in their schools and communities. Through engaging stories and interactive activities, our students learned the importance of kindness, standing up for others, and creating a culture of inclusion and respect. The energy in the room was incredible, and we can’t wait to see how these lessons impact our school! A huge thank you to the Sweethearts & Heroes team for empowering our students with the tools to make a difference! 🌟

"Where The Wild Things Are!" Mrs. Peterman's kindergarten class recently drew a picture of a monster and then wrote a few sentences about the monster. Mrs. Rosa-Martir's Family Living Class took the drawings and used their sewing skills to create the monsters the young students drew. Today, the high school students presented the monsters to the kindergarten students.

"Say! I like green eggs and ham! I do! I like them, Sam-I-Am! I would eat them in a boat, and with a goat, in the rain, on a train, in a car and in a tree. They are so good, so good, you see!" -Dr. Seuss Our kindergarteners enjoying the best lunch!
